Maryland City, Maryland Jun 4, 2025 (Issuewire.com) Inspired by the axis shift prophecies of the medium Edgar Cayce, Ruth Leedy Carr began an investigation in 1980 that soon included the hollow Earth theory. She wrote five books in the 1980s, based in part on cataclysmic hints from experts. Her 1985 book Hollow Earth Apocalypse: Asimov's Warning inspired Isaac Asimov to write an essay entitled "The Hollow Earth," which appears in Past, Present and Future. He denounced the theory and dismissed the unnamed author as a nitwit who had distorted his work and quoted it out of context. Since he was describing the book as "monumental lunacy," was there any justification for him to line up a young man to call Carr long distance and notify her that Asimov was going to have an essay published in response to her book? What for, just so her ego could be thoroughly crushed by his rapier wit? In fact, this essay was loaded with possible SOS signs. The final sentence was "So say I!" The book in question was the type of "astonishing" surprise that "socks me right in the funny bone," he said. Both "astonishing" and "socks" contain S, 0, and Sin order, as did many other words in the essay. The invented word "crackpottery" suggested a hollow earthenware pot that is cracking. After being accused of dropping hollow planet hints, such as a thunderstorm that "rattled across a hollow world" in The Robots of Dawn, it seems Asimov was not trying very hard in this essay to avoid dropping more hints. Another associate of Asimov accosted Carr at a print shop in Chestertown, Maryland and spent time discussing her writing and Asimov, and even borrowed one of her books.

In a story where SOS signs are sent to Earth in part because of a threat to Earth, Asimov included many sets of three dots in "Old-fashioned." Their arrangement suggested he could have been trying to construct SOS signs himself. Carl Sagan, on p. 80 of his novel Contact, included two sets of three dots, which mean "S" in Morse code, with an interval containing three hyphens, making "O" in Morse code, and including a reference to dots and dashes in that interval. The motive behind his SOS may be found in "the Sossafer Chasids," which could be an anagram for: "SOS! The Earth's axis is due to shift."

In "Charles Soskin" from Asimov's story "A Monday in April," we can find: "Each riddle I do is a risky SOS sign." In "zapulniclate" (Azazel), he was apparently saying: "In a puzzle I can tell all." Sagan used "puzzling" next to "Prebula, Switzerland," two names which can be spelled "puzzle." The message here may be:

"I want to warn you as to a planet-wide disaster, but your brain is disabled by Ruler Azazel. So I use puzzles." Similarly, in "Brinsley Sheridan Cooper" (The End of Eternity), Asimov may have meant to say: "Brain is disabled by Ruler Azazel. Please decipher and share riddles."

"Our world is hollow. Upper Europe will be wiped away by a polar hole." This is from "Isidore Wellby, Shapur" in "Gimmicks Three." Similarly, in "Euphrosyne Durando, Cal" from "Cal" (Gold), Asimov may have been saying: "Upper Europe shall end as you and Ed Cayce prophesy, R.A. Leedy." In "Henry J. Lafkowitz" from "Unto the Fourth Generation," we find: "Laugh if you want to, yet I know the hollow Earth theory is no joke." In "Santirix Gremionis" (The Robots of Dawn), Asimov was evidently saying: "Axis migration is near." This character rode on a scooter whose wheels would turn on migrating axes.

As shattering as an axis shift would be, with its potential for volcanic activity and flooding from shifts in polar openings and the equatorial bulge, a far worse crisis turned up in Carr's research around the year 2000. It occurred to her that if Earth's rotation rate was nudged up or down (mostly up) by fluctuations in solar wind strength as it struck the magnetic poles, then Mars, which no longer has magnetic poles, must not be receiving any support for its rotation. The planetary shell must fall out of its orbit around the central star if the rotation speed falls below a critical point. As anagram messages became clearer to her, she discovered that Asimov and Sagan had been aware of the problem.

"Mars is not yet (totally) limp." This is from "Limmar Ponyets" (Foundation). "Mars end nears" can be found in "Mandress" (Foundation's Edge). "Mars is doomed. I am scared" can be found in Mordecai Sims" (Azazel). In "Michael Strong" (Murder at the ABA), the message appears to be: "Mars can not long remain hollow. Its rotation is too slow."

"Mars shall end, and its inner star shall threaten the Earth." This is from "Marshal Nedelin" in Sagan's novel.

"I, Asimov, strive to save the Earth, yet the star inside (doomed) Mars is on the verge of destroying it." This is from "Siever Genarr, Erythro Dome" in Nemesis, where a secret star is heading for Earth.

NASA has discovered a planet shaped like a collapsed football, it was announced by NPR in mid-2024. A hollow planet's shell, like that of a spheroidal planetary nebula, would be thinnest at the equator, and so would collapse into the shape of a football. The hollow shape of the Earth would also explain why powerful earthquakes cause the entire planet to "ring" like a bell, a fact Asimov may have had in mind with his Dr. Urth mystery "The Singing Bell."

About the Author: Ruth Leedy Carr attended Indiana University, where she majored in journalism and psychology and covered stories in many scientific fields. She has written eight books on polar hole shifting, of which two Florida Benton books were republished by Saucerian Press. She was proclaimed by UFO researcher William L. Moore to be the world's foremost proponent of the hollow Earth theory.

This book can be purchased on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many other distribution channels worldwide.
