Child struck and killed in Assumption Parish crash
By: Louisiana State Police
Napoleonville – Shortly after 5:30 pm on May 8, 2019, Troopers with Troop C began investigating a fatality crash involving a pedestrian on Jones Street in Napoleonville. The crash took the life of a 1-year-old child.
The preliminary investigation revealed 52-year-old Connie Holmes of Napoleonville was traveling east on Jones Street in a 2013 Ford Explorer. While Holmes was traveling, a group of children crossed Jones Street ahead of her. Shortly after the children crossed, the child attempted to follow them and entered the path of Holmes’ vehicle. Holmes struck the child in the roadway and he was transported to Assumption Parish Community Hospital by his mother. The child was later pronounced deceased at the hospital by medical staff.
Speed was not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Holmes provided a breath sample which showed no alcohol present and she did not display any signs of impairment. Holmes and her front seat passenger were wearing their seat belts and were not injured in the crash. This crash remains under investigation.
Unfortunately, Troopers witness this type of tragedy far too often. Parents, family members, and friends should be especially mindful of children when they are near a roadway or driveway. Small children can move very quickly and can be hard to see by people in vehicles. We also wish to remind motorists to make sure they are alert and free of distractions when traveling where children can be present.
